The names describe different code features

A smoke barrier forms a more robust continuous membrane or assembly used to restrict smoke movement and, in healthcare settings, to create smoke compartments. A smoke partition is a different feature with its own continuity, opening, and leakage-control requirements.

A drawing line, wall label, or field appearance cannot by itself establish which feature was required; the occupancy, design basis, construction documents, and adopted criteria must be coordinated.13

Door requirements follow the opening and occupancy

A door in a smoke barrier, a corridor door, and a rated fire door can have different construction, closing, latching, inspection, and labeling requirements. CMS specifically warns against applying the annual NFPA 80/105 testing rule for rated fire doors to every non-rated healthcare corridor or smoke-barrier door.567

Penetrations and dampers require the same distinction

The required protection for a cable, pipe, duct, transfer opening, or joint depends on the assembly penetrated. Repair instructions should name the assembly and applicable protection path rather than simply call every wall a fire wall.13

Drawings should preserve the difference

Life safety drawings should use a clear legend and consistent linework for smoke barriers, smoke partitions, fire barriers, and other rated features. Field assessment findings should reference the same controlled identifiers so repairs and plan updates remain traceable.84

Ask the right questions before classifying the wall

Determine the occupancy and code path, the purpose of the assembly, the required continuity, the relationship to smoke compartments or corridors, and the approved design record. Then verify whether the wall is also fire-resistance rated and what opening, penetration, joint, damper, and duct protections follow from that classification.

A single wall can participate in more than one protection strategy, and visual construction alone may not reveal the governing designation. When records and field conditions disagree, preserve the uncertainty and escalate it for design or authority review rather than relabeling the wall to fit an expected repair.1238

Match door and penetration work to the actual assembly

Before ordering door hardware or firestopping, connect the opening or penetration to the controlled assembly designation. A rated fire door, a smoke-barrier door, and a non-rated healthcare corridor door may have different labeling, closing, latching, inspection, and maintenance paths. CMS S&C 17-38-LSC is particularly important when separating annual fire-door testing from routine maintenance of non-rated doors.

For pipes, cables, ducts, and joints, the repair record should state the assembly and applicable protection system. Generic directions such as seal all smoke walls or repair to fire-wall standards can produce unnecessary work while failing to protect the feature that was actually required.5671

Verify the distinction through drawings, field samples, and records

A focused review samples each assembly designation from the plan, follows the line in the field, checks representative doors and penetrations, and compares the findings with inspection and maintenance records. The purpose is not to infer compliance from the drawing; it is to verify that the drawing, building, and management records tell the same story.

Discrepancies should be recorded by location with an owner and resolution path. If a barrier changes designation across projects or sheets, the facility should resolve the design basis before issuing broad repair instructions or representing the life safety plan as current.

Include the resolved designation in the next controlled drawing revision and in affected door, damper, penetration, and maintenance records. That prevents the same terminology conflict from reappearing during later inspections or renovation planning.384
