Begin with the governing drawing identity
Every issued life safety drawing needs a title, facility and building identifier, floor or level, drawing number, issue date, revision marker, scale, north arrow, and accountable preparer or reviewer. The title block should also state the adopted Life Safety Code edition and clearly distinguish the controlled issue from a working copy. Without that identity, staff cannot reliably connect a printed sheet, PDF, or CAD export to the facility, governing basis, or current revision.12345
1. Show occupancy and construction information
Identify the occupancy classification or classifications represented on the floor and the construction type used for the building analysis. Where mixed occupancies, separations, or building additions affect the code path, show the boundary and label the relationship rather than relying on a general note. The plan should give a qualified reviewer enough context to understand which healthcare occupancy provisions apply and where a change in use could alter the analysis.12345
2. Map smoke compartments and their areas
Show every smoke barrier, label its required fire-resistance rating, identify protected openings, and calculate each smoke-compartment area using a consistent method. Compartment labels must be unique and should agree with relocation plans, fire alarm zoning references, barrier inventories, and survey documentation. If a barrier serves more than one function, record each function. A colored line without a label, rating, or traceable endpoint does not adequately communicate the compartmentation strategy.12345
3. Delineate suites and suite attributes
Outline each sleeping or non-sleeping suite, assign a stable suite identifier, state its area, and identify the permitted exit-access arrangement. Show suite exit access doors and the paths used to support travel-distance conclusions. The suite boundary must reflect actual room use and supervision, not merely a departmental outline. When a suite changes size, function, door arrangement, or intervening space, the drawing and supporting analysis should be reviewed together before the revised condition is accepted.12345
4. Communicate the complete means of egress
Identify exits, exit enclosures, horizontal exits, exit-access doors, discharge points, and the route to the public way where it is needed to understand compliance. Preserve measured travel paths and the endpoints used for the calculation. Note special locking arrangements and significant changes in level. A plan should let the facility trace a realistic means of egress from occupied spaces through the correct doors and protected components without reconstructing the design from several unrelated sheets.12345
5 and 6. Identify rated assemblies and opening protectives
Distinguish fire barriers, smoke barriers, fire partitions, shaft enclosures, horizontal-exit separations, and other rated assemblies with separate line types and labels. Show representative door, damper, and opening-protective information in a way that connects to controlled inventories. The plan is not a substitute for an assembly listing or inspection record, but it should reveal which boundary a door, penetration, duct, or joint protects so field teams apply the correct maintenance criteria.12345
7. Preserve legends, revisions, and source traceability
Use a legend that defines every line, hatch, abbreviation, symbol, and rating displayed on the sheet. Add a revision history that states what changed, where it changed, why it changed, and who approved the issue. Reference the verified source files, field survey, approved project documents, and unresolved assumptions used to prepare the plan. Before release, audit all seven information groups against representative field locations and retire superseded copies from operational use.12345
