Select a system, not just a product
Firestop sealant, putty, collars, wraps, pillows, devices, and mortar are components used within tested or evaluated systems. The product label alone does not establish that a cable or pipe penetration is protected. Selection begins with the complete installed configuration and an authoritative listing or accepted design. Hospital standards should require the system identifier before work begins so the contractor does not choose material in the field after creating an opening that no available system can accommodate.1234567
Identify the barrier construction
Confirm whether the penetration passes through a gypsum wall, concrete or masonry wall, floor, shaft, or another assembly, and record thickness, rating, layers, stud or structural construction, and orientation. Determine whether the condition is a through-penetration or membrane penetration. The tested assembly in the selected system must match the field within its stated limits. A system for a concrete floor cannot be assumed to apply to a lightweight gypsum smoke barrier because the same sealant appears in both details.1234567
Define the penetrating item precisely
Record cable type and bundle size, metallic or nonmetallic pipe, conduit, tubing, insulated service, duct, sleeve, mixed penetrants, and any combustible components. Verify material, diameter, insulation type and thickness, quantity, spacing, and movement needs. Future cable growth should be handled through a listed device or appropriately sized system, not an oversized opening filled loosely for convenience. Mixed penetrations require a system that specifically permits the combination and arrangement present.1234567
Check opening and annular-space limits
Measure the opening and penetrating item so minimum and maximum annular spaces, separation between penetrants, sleeve conditions, and maximum opening dimensions can be compared with the listing. Coordinate core drilling and sleeve selection before installation. An opening that is too large, too tight, irregular, or crowded may prevent the selected system from being installed as tested. Do not treat extra sealant as compensation for geometry outside the system limits; revise the opening or select a suitable accepted system.1234567
Match packing, depth, and accessories
Review required backing material, packing depth and compression, sealant depth, collars, wraps, anchors, devices, and installation on one or both sides. Confirm compatibility with pipe insulation, jacketing, cable coatings, and environmental conditions. Make the system detail available to installers at the work area. Inspect before concealment so backing and depth can be verified. A smooth finished surface may hide missing mineral wool, inadequate depth, absent collars, or other components essential to the tested performance.1234567
Control substitutions and engineering judgments
When field conditions do not match a listed system, stop and obtain a documented alternative through the facility's accepted process. Product changes, added cables, different insulation, oversized sleeves, or inaccessible sides can invalidate the original selection. Engineering judgments or field evaluations should be issued by qualified sources, be specific to the condition, and receive required facility or authority review. They should not become generic permission to use one product wherever installers encounter an unusual opening.1234567
Preserve the system record for maintenance
Link the system identifier, submittal, permit, installer, location, photographs, inspection result, and any approved deviation to a stable penetration or barrier record. Label the installation when facility policy requires it and when the label can remain legible without damaging the assembly. Future technicians should be able to determine what may be added or altered. During audits, sample the record against the field. Reliable selection continues after installation because cable additions and maintenance can change the configuration that was originally accepted.1234567
